HISTORICAL TOUR OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF EL COCUY

Upon arriving in the municipality of El Cocuy, you cannot miss this spectacular architectural tour, which invites you to discover the cultural and historical legacy of El Cocuy — still considered today one of the most beautiful towns in Boyacá and in Colombia. It has been declared Architectural Heritage of Boyacá due to the architectural style of its Republican and Colonial‑era houses, along with its cobblestone streets.

El Cocuy was the fourth settlement legally founded by the Spaniards in the New Kingdom of Granada: the first was Santafé de Bogotá (1538), the second Vélez (1539), the third Tunja (1539), and the fourth San Gabriel de El Cocuy, founded in the first quarter of 1541 by Captain Gonzalo García Zorro

MAHOMA VIEWPOINT TRAIL

The hike to Mount Mahoma ranges between 3,800 and 4,150 meters in altitude, making this viewpoint the highest that can be found in Colombia. It is ideal for acclimatization and offers the opportunity to discover the charms of the plants, birds, and animals native to the páramo ecosystem. From here, you can also appreciate the beauty of the Sierra Nevada of Cocuy, Güicán, and Chita, as well as the different panoramic views of several municipalities in the Norte and Gutiérrez provinces.

HIGH ANDEAN CLOUD FOREST

This route is characterized by the fact that visitors can directly observe the richness of a high Andean cloud forest, located at 3,250 meters above sea level, where trees such as raque, encenillo, mortiño, cucharo, romero, aliso, and sietecueros stand out, among others, along with a variety of ferns, mosses, and lichens that form thick carpets across the forest floor. There is also an abundance of epiphytes such as bromeliads, orchids, mosses, and lichens.

Continuing along the ancestral path that connects to the urban area of El Cocuy—once used by our ancestors to transport their products on horseback for trade—you will experience a journey rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
